Picture This! The Real Cost of Prison Expansion at the Philadelphia Reads Mural
Governor Corbett’s proposed budget cuts PA’s Adult Literacy funding by 5%. This comes after last year’s 17% cut, and means that almost $3 million has been taken from adult and family literacy programs over the past two years.
These cuts come at a time when high unemployment makes literacy skills even more important for job searching, and when 13% of adults in Pennsylvania lack basic literacy skills.
The $3 million cut to adult literacy is equal to the cost of about 30 of the 5,000-plus new prison beds that are currently being built in Pennsylvania.
